How can we Measure Experience?

+

A twelve-week summer research scholarship with Warren and Mahoney Architects, with the brief of developing methods to measure workplace experience, in collaboration with Scott Compton and Asha Page, and under the academic supervision of Dr. Antony Pelosi.

This research set out to investigate how workplace experience could be measured across 12 completed projects, with the aim of building a framework for a “Return on Experience” (ROE) rating system. My role involved determining feasible metrics, analysing project data, and conducting site visits, all while creating a measurement system to record my findings. The outcome was a comprehensive research report and roadmap, providing recommendations for how WAM could embed consistent measurement into their standard practice workflow.

This research strengthened my ability to design and test methodologies within a professional context. I translated architectural data into measurable metrics, identified gaps in workflows, and proposed recommendations for standardising future data collection. At the same time, site visits and staff engagement highlighted the importance of perception, teaching me how to balance numerical data with qualitative experience. The project demonstrated how structured research can be embedded into design practice, shaping both efficiency and creativity in workplace strategy.
